Dolly was still with The Porter Wagoner Show when my late husband and I saw them at a high school in the Detroit suburbs.  We knew then she would outshine Porter in no time.  Two years later Jolene came out.  It spoke vividly to the fears and nightmares I harbored for many years of my marriage.
 My late husband had been married twice before and had children from both marriages.  From the start he said little about either woman which allowed my imagination to run rampart and fuel my lack of self-confidence.  Every communication from either of them (in reality there were few) sent me into a tail spin of doubt and depression, certain that they would show up and he would choose one them over me.  Outside sources on both sides that seemed to want our marriage to fail didn’t help matters.
 In the early 80’s circumstances presented themselves that would have given him the opportunity to do just as I’d always feared—choose one of them over me—but he rejected both options as ludicrous.  My fears were finally put to rest completely.
 When I hear Jolene now I remember that for me that “other woman” was in reality “just a figment of my insecurities” and the green-eyed monster is jealousy not a woman named Jolene or Judy or Monica or…
