It was 1959 and I was 12.  My sister, and best friend at the time, was getting married.  Our home was filled with family from out of town.  To accommodate everyone for sleeping my sister and I slept on the sofa bed in the living room.  Just before waking I dreamed I was walking along the shore of endless water towards the one man who would be my soul mate for life.  I could not see what he looked like as a mist hindered my visibility.  I was almost to him when my mother woke me and I heard Love Letters in the Sand playing on the radio.  While I realized that the song just on the edge of my consciousness had undoubtedly fueled the dream, I believe now as I did then that it was a portent of my destiny.
No, I’ve never felt that I would only find my soul mate while walking along the shore. However, I’ve known since that day that living by a large body of water with the man who would appreciate it as much as I do and appreciate me for the woman life has helped me to become had to be my ultimate goal.  I’m still working on it and still believe it will all come to pass.  There have been many detours and false starts along the way, but I continue on.  Three years ago I found the man.  He has been a modern day pirate, a scuba diving instructor, loves snorkeling, and loves me.  That barely scratches the surface of the ways in which I knew he was the “man of my dream”, but it makes my point.  We don’t live near the water yet, but I’m confident that we will within five years.
Just a silly dream most would say, but its affect on me has lasted a long, long time thanks to a song playing on the radio.
