The music on this song is very upbeat so one would expect the message or lyrics to be as well.  At first hearing that does seem to be the case, but after listening closely a few times the real message came through for me.  It’s a perfect message for anyone contemplating a serious relationship.  For me it has become a response to any situation hitting bumps in the road.
“I never promised you a rose garden.  There’s got to be a little rain sometime.”  That’s life.  Without the rain (trials and tribulations) we really can’t fully appreciate the sunshine and roses.  The best we can hope for is more roses than rain.  That takes true commitment and really working at it together.  She issues her warning as well, “You better look before you leap, still water runs deep”.  Know what you’re getting into and with whom first.
Over the years since I first heard this song it has served me well.  Not only does it give me an answer when things aren’t going as others thought or hoped, but it also reminds me when things are stressing me that no one promised me a rose garden either.  With that in mind I find it easier to handle the rain and look for the roses to come.
It has become such a part of my vocabulary that I wasn’t in the least surprised when one of my good friends used this song as a ringtone to identify when I’m calling her.  No rose garden, but all the love and laughter you can handle if you just don’t expect perfection all the time.
