The Shirelles

Formed in New Jersey in the late 1950s, the Shirelles are one of the earliest girl groups. They secured their place in pop-music history in 1960 with their immaculate version of Carole King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow." The Shirelles' blend of classy pop, doo-wop, and just a hint of R&B grit would serve them well for years to come, and become a blueprint not only for the numerous girl groups that followed, but also for British Invasion bands (the Beatles among them) searching for the perfect mix of pop smarts and rock cool. While the Shirelles took numerous breaks over the years, they were a top draw on the oldies circuit into the '90s.
