An American original and a genuinely legendary queen of country music for decades, Tammy Wynette was a cultural icon from the first minute anybody heard her version of "Stand By Your Man" on the radio. Over the rest of her lengthy career, she triumphed over a genuine soap-opera of a private life (including the highly public crackup of her marriage to another living country legend, George Jones), racked up scores of country hits (including "D-I-V-O-R-C-E, and "Bedtime Story") and even wound up appearing on KLF singles and collaborating with Sting. The First Lady of country, for sure.
