About this Artist
Celtic FrostSwitzerland's Celtic Frost have had a massive influence on the rise of European heavy metal and the splintering of metal (in general) into its myriad subgenres. Formed in 1984 after the dissolution of proto-death metal act Hellhammer, Celtic Frost released several albums over the course of the decade that simultaneously pushed the genre's musical boundaries, while codifying key sonic and stylistic markers of the metal sound. Introducing elements of prog, classical music, noise, and even sampling into straight-up thrash metal and cloaking it all in near-operatic occult imagery, Celtic Frost helped pave the way for metal offshoots such as doom, black, death, and gothic metal.
