About this Artist
Bobbie GentryCountry/pop signer Bobbie Gentry is an anomaly in both genres. She broke into the scene in 1967 with the self-penned story-song "Ode to Billy Joe," about the events surrounding the suicide of a teenage boy in Choctaw, Mississippi. The song combined dirgy blues, pop hooks, and soulful vocals, and marked the arrival of a distinct new voice in music. Gentry would never again achieve the success of "Ode to Billy Joe," but she did score a few hits via her beloved collaborations with Glenn Campbell. Gentry has maintained a cult following over the decades thanks to her mercurial amalgam of blues, country, soul, and Bacharach-style pop. Definitive Albums
